It still manages to surprise me whenever I realize it. The evidence is spread out throughout my life, after all. The truth is, I have always, always been into shoes.
My latest re-realization came as I was browsing the Solestruck website. Just looking! Hehe! :) One pair reminded me of my late Lola Auring, who used to live in London. Every now and then, she would ask me what I wanted from there. I used to ask for different stuff, like St. Michael’s socks (THE socks du jour when I was in grade/high school), the usual chocolates, sometimes perfume (I wasn’t allergic to the stuff back then). I also asked her for shoes.
This one time, I was on stage to receive an award (Yes, hehe!), and the girl presenting the trophy was wearing the most amazing pair of black shoes, sort of like Litas sans the platforms. (Syempre yun ang napansin ko. Nasa stage pa yan ha, at ako ang awardee. Nagawa pang makapansin ng sapatos hehe!) I fortunately had the chance to have this one photo taken with her, but more importantly, one that showed her shoes in the picture! It wasn’t a clear shot of the shoes, by any means. It was the furthest thing from a Tommy Ton capture. It was just your standard group shot. So why was it important that I had it? This was back in the day when printed photos were the only kind, the time of film and developing. I remember mailing this precious, one and only print over to my Lola in London so she could use it as reference in finding me a similar pair. EFFORT!!! :D
Great lola that she was, of course she came through for me! The pair she got me wasn’t exactly like the one I asked for, but considering that all she had was that tiny, undetailed picture of the shoes, it was close enough to make me happy. They may have differed in material (the award-giver’s was smooth leather, mine was suede), but they came in the same lace up style with chunky, stacked heels. Oh yes, even after almost twenty years, I can still see both pairs clearly in my mind, another evidence of this long-running obsession.
I have, since then, bought quite a few (Ehem…) iterations of this particular style. What can I say? My taste has proved very consistent. :)
Incidentally, July is my Lola’s birth month. Happy birthday, Lola Auring! Love and prayers for you! Thank you for indulging my early love affair with shoes.
